Frequently asked questions
- Is this financial advice?
-
No.
- Who are you?
-
My name is Kris Hamoud. I'm an infrastructure engineer for ConvertKit.
- Why did you build this?
-
I think reddit/social media/the internet hivemind picking stocks is here to stay. I'm curious how the sentiment towards the stock market will change over time.
Additionally, since I work for ConvertKit I figured this would be a good opportunity to build my own newsletter.
- How does it work?
-
Every day WallStreetBets has two daily discussion threads. One is the "Daily Discussion" which happens throughout the day. The other is "What are your moves tomorrow?" They each have interesting properties. "Daily discussions" allow me to track sentiment throughout the trading day and "What are your moves tomorrow" threads allow me to track sentiment before the market opens.
- Why are you tracking WallStreetBets instead of <insert_other_stock_community>?
-
WSB has over 12 million subscribers. /r/stocks has 4 million subscribers. /r/investing has 2 million subscribers. I could include these subreddits as well but I can analyze 10,000 to 20,000 comments on any day in WSB. The other subs I've mentioned don't get as much engagment on their daily discussion. There's just more data in WSB than the others.
- What threads do you track?
-
Right now I only read the "Daily Discussion" and "What are your moves tomorrow?" threads.
- Infra Engineers and SREs aren't data scientists.
-
Not a question but you're right. I'm not a data scientist.
- What's the tech stack?
-
The reddit scraping and sentiment analysis is done with Python using praw and spaCy respectively.
The data is output in JSON format and fed to this website which is built with hugo and tailwindcss. - Why should we trust reddit?
-
You shouldn't.
- Is this financial advice?
